The starting location is a short drive from Redding, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in California are often tougher than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The |
campgrounds here at Pit River are pretty good. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. The beauty of the Southern Cascade Range is a great plus for this river.
| You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling spots. The wonderful California scenery and the playfulness of the water beats anything. This section of Pit River is 9 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class IV section of whitewater. This stretch is mid length, you can easily run it on an afternoon. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, | |
|
the Pit 5 Dam to Pit 5 Powerhouse section is just one of many.
Briefly about the general area: Here at Pit River you'll in all probability meet some people from Big Bend, and there's wonderful hiking along the
Nelson Flat Trail. These mountains rock, just check out all the exciting stuff to do in the Southern Cascade Range. The beauty of mother nature reveals herself at Big Bend Hot Springs. The Pacific Crest Trail - section 17
offers hiking at its best. The high level of precipitation makes Pit River a relatively wet location. Of all the months in a year January is the one with the most rain, and the driest month is July.
