Whitewater rafting and kayaking in California is often more difficult than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. The wild scenery of the Central Sierra Nevada is great. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if     you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your sleeping bag. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Madera, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This stretch of San Joaquin River is 11 miles long and is a class III-V section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Getting your paddling muscles activated   and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. Briefly about the general area: At San Joaquin River you always meet someone from Auberry. Millerton Lake State Park is a wonderful place to check out on a wonderful day. All the water falling down from the sky makes San Joaquin River a wet site. Most of the rain falls through January, and July is when it's the driest. During the summer months at San Joaquin River temperatures are generally in the 80's, and throughout summer nights temperatures are in the 40's. All through the winter this place gets highs in the 40's, and through the dark hours in the wintertime at San Joaquin River temperatures plunge to the 20's.
