The scenic beauty of Fresno/ Madera County and the water flowing gracefully down San Joaquin River - South Fork are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. River - South Fork is 7 miles long and has been rated as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. When you're paddling down a Central Sierra Nevada river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too.
| The put-in is not too far from Visalia-Porterville, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Briefly about
the general area: Sierra Summit is a good local ski area, and hiking along the Red Mountain Trail is magnificent fun. Yeah, come up here to the Central Sierra Nevada for a pleasant time. At San Joaquin River - South
Fork during the summer highs are in the 70's while nighttime lows are regularly in the 40's. Daytime highs through the winter are in the 40's, and nighttime lows at San Joaquin River - South Fork throughout the winter frequently drop into the 20's.
