The average California whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable. The put-in is not too far from Red Bluff, as you can see on the road map further down. The wild scenery of the Klamath Mountains is great. The beautiful scenery of California and the water flowing gracefully down Thomes Creek are reasons enough to come |
here and paddle. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This stretch of Thomes Creek in California is 22 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V+ section by American Whitewater. If you have
| the time you can make this a two day trip, so why not pack your camping stuff too. The Above Paskenta stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Some people | |
|
prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good rivers.
Briefly about the general area: Don't leave Thomes Creek without visiting Mendocino National Forest,
and you can have a fine hiking adventure along the Buttermilk Trail. Just can't get enough of the Klamath Mountains. A tour to Whiskey Saddle is always fun; while you're here you can take a hike along the Lanyan Trail. This
river is a wonderful place to visit. The beauty of mother nature reveals herself at Government Spring. Summertime highs at Thomes Creek mostly tend to be in the 90's.
