California whitewater, Van Duzen River

Humboldt county, Grizzly Creek to Highway 36 bridge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-III     5.2 miles
The beautiful scenery of California and the water flowing gracefully down Van Duzen River have people coming here. The put-in location is a short drive from Eureka-Arcata-Fortuna, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you wonít get lost. This section of Van Duzen River is 5.2 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river
tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so don't forget that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This river system
has a few good paddling stretches and the Grizzly Creek to Highway 36 bridge section is one of them. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you won't find a large number of other rivers. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but
if you donít have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The beautiful Coast Ranges scenery is an added bonus.

Briefly about the general area:
Humboldt Redwoods State Park is a delightful spot to check out, and Devils Elbow is something you shouldn't miss since you're here. So much fun stuff to do in the Coast Ranges, not enough time. Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park is a gorgeous place any time of year, and you'll probably meet some folks from Carlotta here. This river has it all. The amount of precipitation that falls at Van Duzen River is close to the national average.
