California whitewater, West Walker River

Mono county, Highway 395 Bridge to Walker section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III-V     11 miles
The Highway 395 Bridge to Walker stretch of West Walker River is 11 miles long and has been rated as a class III-V section by American Whitewater. If you're coming from Gardnerville Ranchos it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in California are often more challenging than in other states, so better not forget that a lot of
the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The river winds through the Central Sierra Nevada and you get great scenery. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem
and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. The nature scenery of California and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The Highway 395 Bridge to Walker section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking
or both, doesn't matter, there are not so many other good rivers for that around here. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so pack your sleeping bag. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.
