Colorado whitewater, Dolores River

Dolores Montrose San Miguel county, Dove Creek Pump Station to Slickrock section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-III+(IV)     28 miles
The starting point is not too far from Montrose, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. This stretch of Dolores River in Dolores/Montrose/San Miguel County is 28 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III+(IV) section of whitewater. The wonderful Colorado scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This river system
is full of great paddling stretches, the Dove Creek Pump Station to Slickrock stretch is just one of them. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are not so many other good places
for that around here. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Colorado are harder than the national norm, so if you're not from around here don't forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while
are great attractions for lots of people. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.

Briefly about the general area:
The beauty of mother nature reveals herself at Piney Spring, and during your tour here you'll meet some folks from Egnar for sure. A tour to Dolores River wouldn't be complete without taking a look at Sawmill Spring. Dolores River is ordinarily a quite dried up site. October is the wettest month with most rain, and the driest month of the year is June. Summertime brings highs in the 80's to Dolores River with night lows in the 50's.
