Colorado whitewater, Grape Creek Fremont county, Bear Gulch to Canon City section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS IV+     15 miles   The Bear Gulch to Canon City stretch of Grape Creek is 15 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV+ section. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Colorado you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so better not forget that rivers here are less forgiving. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but     why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. If you're coming from Canon City it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. The beautiful scenery of Colorado and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. Briefly   about the general area: Tanner Gulch is a good location to explore nearby, and don't leave Grape Creek without first going for a hike along the Tanner Trail. This is a popular place for folks from Canon City, and there's good hiking along the Stultz Trail. At this river you will never have a bad time. Around Grape Creek you don’t get a lot of rain. The wettest month of the year is ordinarily August, that's the one that rains the most while January is the month with the least amount of precipitation. Throughout the days of summer at Grape Creek temperatures are usually in the 70's.
