The Almont to Blue Mesa Reservoir section of Gunnison River in Colorado is 18 miles long and is a class II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The wonderful Gunnison County scenery and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in     this river system, there are a few others too. The campgrounds here at Gunnison River are pretty good. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your camp stove. Briefly about the general area: You might want to pay a visit to Blinberry Gulch   if you're here at Gunnison River. Gunnison River is right by the Granite Basin Trail, and hiking along the Lowline Trail is good fun. If you come to this river you will have a good time for sure. Gunnison River gets very little rainfall. The month of December is the wettest with most of the snow, and June is when it's the driest. During the warm months highs here at Gunnison River get into the 70's, and during the night it cools down to the 30's. The winter comes with highs in the 20's while the cold winter nights at Gunnison River are in the-10's.
