Colorado whitewater, Lake Creek

Lake county, Graham Gulch to 1/4 mi east of Monitor Gulch section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS V+     9 miles
The beautiful scenery of Lake County and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great. The average Colorado whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip. If you're coming from Edwards it's not a long drive
at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with
plenty of rivers for that. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. Whitewater paddling here in the Sawatch Range is a great experience. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all
set. This stretch of Lake Creek is 9 miles long and it is classified as a class V+ section by American Whitewater. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby.

Briefly about the general area:
Hayden Gulch is near Lake Creek and is a perfect place, and if you're visiting from Twin Lakes, you won't be the only one. And that's not everything there is to do here in the Sawatch Range. If the weather is fine here at Lake Creek, you can go for a hike along the Mount Elbert Trail. The Mount Massive Trail is a fine hiking trail in the neighborhood of Lake Creek. During the months of summer here at Lake Creek, high temperatures generally reach the 70's, and throughout summer nights temperatures are in the 40's.
