If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Colorado you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. The put-in location is a short drive from Durango, as you can see on the road     map further down. The Lake City Town Run section of Lake Fork Gunnison River in Colorado is 3.6 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III section. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. This is a somewhat short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. When you're paddling down   a San Juan and Jemez Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Lake City Town Run section is one of them. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Briefly about the general area: There is a perfect hiking trail in the vicinity of Lake Fork Gunnison River called the Ridge Stock Driveway, and nearby Sparling Gulch is a perfect site to go. Just can't get enough of the San Juan and Jemez Mountains. Near Lake Fork Gunnison River you come across the Big Blue Trail which is a good hiking trail; you'll meet a lot of people from Lake City here.
