Colorado whitewater, Lime Creek

1st Gorge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS V+     3 miles
The natural beauty of Colorado and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. The starting location is a short drive from Durango, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. This section of Lime Creek in Colorado is 3 miles long and has been rated as a class V+ section by American Whitewater. The 1st Gorge stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this
river system. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there
are lots of good rivers for that around here. This stretch is short so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. The wild scenery of the San Juan and Jemez Mountains is great. There's camping available near Lime Creek. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other
states, so don't forget that rivers here are less forgiving.

Briefly about the general area:
Near Lime Creek you locate Coal Bank Pass which is a good place to visit; you'll most likely meet some folks from Silverton here. And if that's not sufficient there's a lot more fun stuff to do in the San Juan and Jemez Mountains. If you like skiing, you're in luck; Purgatory is near Lime Creek, and don't leave Lime Creek without first going for a hike along the Highline Trail. Lots of fun awaits you along this river. Good hiking is available along the Deer Park Trail. Summertime brings highs in the 70's to Lime Creek.
