This stretch of Piedra River in Hinsdale/ Archuleta County is 10 miles long and is a class III-V section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you're coming from Durango it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further     down the page. The beauty of the San Juan and Jemez Mountains is a great plus for this river. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the 1st Fork Bridge to Lower Piedra Campgound stretch is just one of many. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby.   Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Colorado are often tougher than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners.
