The wonderful Gunnison County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Slate River beats anything. There's camping available near Slate River. The Beaver Ponds to Oh Be Joyful Campground section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either     way this area has a large number of paddling places. This stretch of Slate River in Gunnison County is 2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class V section. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Colorado are often tougher than in other states, so don't forget that rivers here are less forgiving. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is a bit of a short stretch so you'd better be prepared to walk   your kayak back to put-in a few times. Briefly about the general area: Head up to Crested Butte and strap some skis to your feet, and Slate River is right by the Lowline Trail. At Slate River you always meet someone from Crested Butte, and a great place close by is Poverty Gulch. At this river you will always have a good time. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Trail Riders Trail. During the long summer days at Slate River highs are frequently in the 70's with night lows in the 40's. During the wintertime the highs are generally in the 30's, and during the dark hours in the wintertime at Slate River temperatures plunge to the-10's.
