The put-in is not too far from Durango, as you can see on the road map further down. The 1 mile above Vallecito Campground section of Vallecito Creek is 1 miles long and has been rated as a class V+ section by American Whitewater. Whitewater paddling here in the San Juan and Jemez Mountains is a great experience. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here. The campgrounds here at Vallecito Creek are pretty good. The nearby hotels are a bit away   from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Briefly about the general area: Hiking is a popular thing to do around Vallecito Creek; Pine-Piedra Stock Driveway is a great local trail. Going to San Juan National Forest near Vallecito Creek is a nice thing to do, and why not take a refreshing hike along the Whitehead Trail. This river is a wonderful place to visit. All through the warm days of summer here at Vallecito Creek, high temperatures ordinarily get into the 70's. For the period of the moonlight hours it's commonly in the 40's.
