Colorado whitewater, Willow Creek

Grand county, National Forest Campground to Reservoir section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II     6 miles
The beautiful scenery of Grand County and the water flowing gracefully down Willow Creek beats anything. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Colorado are often more challenging than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The put-in location is a short drive from Silverthorne, there's a road map further down the page with more info on
that. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The National Forest Campground to Reservoir stretch of Willow Creek is 6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II section. This is one of a small number
of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. The beautiful Park Range scenery is
an added bonus. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots.

Briefly about the general area:
On a wonderful day at Willow Creek you can take a hike along the Gilsonite Trail; if you like skiing, you're in luck; SolVista Basin is quite near. Whohoo, so much amusing stuff in one place! The Park Range rocks! There is a good hiking trail close to Willow Creek called the Wolverine Trail, and you'll meet a lot of people from Hot Sulphur Springs here. This is such a fun river. A day at striking Surprise Beach in close proximity to Willow Creek is a pleasant thing to do.
