  This section of Alcovy River in Barrow/ Walton/ Newton County is 21 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III section of whitewater. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want
    to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. The natural beauty of Barrow/ Walton/ Newton
County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling places. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. The put-in location is a short drive from Gainesville, as you can see on the road map further down. There are  
a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well.

Briefly about the general area:
Lots of people from Oxford come to Alcovy River. Alcovy River is a wet spot that gets much precipitation. March is when you get the most rain here, and October on the other hand is the driest. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Alcovy River, and all through summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 50's while Alcovy River overnight low temperatures during the winter are in the 30's.
