The natural beauty of Gilmer County and the playfulness of the water have people coming here. The average Georgia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The starting point is not too far from Cleveland, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. |
No need to look hard for hotels, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. You might be into whitewater rafting
| or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good places for that around here. This stretch of Cartecay River is 8 miles long and has been rated as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby.

Creek Trail is a tremendous hiking trail near Cartecay River, and during your journey here you'll meet some people from East Ellijay for sure. If the weather is good here at Cartecay River, you can go for a hike along the
Bear Creek Trail. Don't leave Cartecay River without stopping by Amicalola Falls and Lodge State Park. Through the summer at Cartecay River highs are commonly in the 80's, and during summer nights temperatures are in the
60's. Throughout the wintertime this place gets highs in the 40's while Cartecay River night low temperatures all through the winter are in the 20's.
