Georgia whitewater, Chestatee River

Lumpkin county, Turners Corner to Grindle Bridge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-III+     11.4 miles

This was not a great run, maybe because the water was low, and some guy was telling us it was illegal for us to be on ''his'' river. Check out riparian law dude! The waterway belongs to the public and cannot be obstructed according to federal law- Anyway, the trip included lots of dragging over rocks. Maybe the water was low. We went July 15th 2009, the 11 mile trip which should have taken a day took us the day. However we never made it to
the end. And according to Scottie Davis, our rescuer, we would have been spending the night somewhere and then taking another day to get to the end. Well, my bad, kind of jumped into that without a lot of planning, but it
was a beautiful ride. Definitely would do again if the river were a little higher. Peace-evagael Says Evagael

Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Georgia is often more difficult than elsewhere, so better not forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Gainesville, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby

campground. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Turners Corner to Grindle Bridge section is just one of many. The nature scenery of Georgia and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. The Turners Corner to Grindle Bridge stretch of Chestatee River in Georgia is 11.4 miles long and is a class II-III+ section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.
