The beautiful scenery of Lumpkin/ Dawson County and the playfulness of the water beats anything. If you're coming from Gainesville it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with |
plenty of places for that. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are plenty of other sections in this river
| system that can be paddled as well. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so pack your sleeping bag. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. When you're paddling down a Blue Ridge Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Georgia are often more challenging | |
|
than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. The US 19 to Highway 136 stretch of Etowah River in Georgia is 13.3 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater
as a class II(IV) section.
Briefly about the general area: Etowah River is not far at all from Dahlonega, and on a good day you can take a hike along the Black Mountain Trail. So many enjoyable things in the Blue
Ridge Mountains, just striking. The high level of precipitation makes Etowah River a pretty wet spot. The month of March is the wettest with most of the rain while October is regularly the driest month.
