Georgia whitewater, Potato Creek

Upson county, Highway 74 to Flint River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III-IV     9 miles

We went from 74 to 36, about 3 miles, I think. It was great nice peaceful stretches of calm water and great little rapids. Take out point at 36 is very rough. All private land and I ask owner if we could take out on his land , he said NO NO. But we still had a good day.Planning a trip from 36 to flint. nubhtar@yahoo.com. Says Nubhtar

This section of Potato Creek is 9 miles long and has been rated as a class III-IV section by American
Whitewater. The nature scenery of Upson County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging,
so better not forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Highway 74 to Flint River section is one of them. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you won't find many other paddling rivers. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you came.
Lodging is available near the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The starting point is not too far from Thomaston, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page.

Briefly about the general area:
The nice folks of Thomaston like to hang out nearby. Potato Creek is a reasonably wet place regularly with a large amount of rainfall. The month of March is the wettest with most of the rain, and October on the other hand is the driest. All through the warm days of summer, highs generally are in the 90's at Potato Creek.
