Idaho whitewater, Panther Creek

Lemhi county, Clear Creek to Main Salmon confluence section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III     4 miles
Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Idaho are harder than the national norm, so don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. If you're coming from Missoula it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The Clear Creek to Main Salmon confluence stretch of Panther Creek is 4 miles long and is a class III section of
whitewater according to American Whitewater. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are not so many other good rivers for that around here. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions
for lots of people. The wonderful Lemhi County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. On this section you do get some distance, you can easily run it on an afternoon. When you're paddling down a Bitterroot
Range river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Clear Creek to Main Salmon confluence section is just one of many. There's camping available near Panther Creek.

Briefly about the general area:
A good spot to pop by near Panther Creek is Bear Gulch; going for a hike on the Sagebrush Lookout Trail is always a perfect adventure. But wait, there's more entertaining things to do in the Bitterroot Range. Salmon National Forest is a fine location; you'll meet a lot of folks from Shoup here.
