The Johnny Creek to I-86 stretch of Portneuf River in Idaho is 15.6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-V section. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Pocatello, as you can see on the road map further down. This stretch is long enough     for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your camping stuff. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Johnny Creek to I-86 section is one of them. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The beautiful scenery of Bannock County and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general   area you won't find many other paddling places. Briefly about the general area: You must absolutely go to picturesque Bronco Beach if you're here at Portneuf River, and while you're here you will meet lots of people from close by Pocatello. Wheatgrass Bench is right next door to Portneuf River and is a lovely beach to explore. At Portneuf River you don’t see much precipitation. For the period of the month of May you get the most rain around here, and July is when it's the driest. High temperatures at Portneuf River through the long summer days are in the 80's.
