If you're coming from Lewiston it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful Idaho County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream have people coming here. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations |
in advance you're all set. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Idaho you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for
| beginners. The White Bird to Snake River confluence stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day trip, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear. or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of spots for that. This stretch of Salmon River is 50 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-IV section of whitewater.
Briefly about the
general area: Nearby Chamberlain Gulch is a good place to go if you're at Salmon River. Summertime highs at Salmon River regularly tend to be in the 80's; the night is a tad colder of course, commonly in the 40's. The
wintertime brings highs down to the 30's, and all through the dark hours in the wintertime at Salmon River temperatures plunge to the 20's.
