Idaho whitewater, Selway River

Idaho county, Paradise to Selway Falls section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV     47 miles
The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Missoula, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. This stretch of Selway River in Idaho County is 47 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV section. The beautiful scenery of Idaho County and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive
a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. There are campgrounds
quite near the river where you can camp. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the Paradise to Selway Falls section is one of them. The river winds through the Clearwater Mountains and you get great scenery. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Idaho are often tougher than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. Since you're on this site you
are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you won't find many other paddling spots. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day trip, so better bring your camping gear along.

Briefly about the general area:
There is a good hiking trail close to Selway River called the Nez Perce Trail. Going for a hike on the Old Nez Perce Indian Trail is always a perfect adventure. Selway River gets a common amount of yearly rain. Of all the months in a year January is the one with the most snow; July is the month with the least moisture.
