The nature scenery of Shoshone County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The Heller Creek to Spruce Tree stretch of St. Joe River is 16 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-IV section. The put-in location is a short drive from Missoula, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. And of course, there are campgrounds |
nearby. The Bitterroot Range scenery is wonderful. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your camp stove. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might
| find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so better not forget that rivers here are less forgiving. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
