Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Idaho is often tougher than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. This stretch of St. Joe River - Skookum Canyon is 4 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III-IV section. The beautiful Bitterroot Range scenery is an added bonus. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end |
up sleeping in your car. The beautiful scenery of Idaho and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream will make you feel great. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. There
| are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. If you're coming from Coeur d'Alene it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Briefly about the general area: Going to St. Joe National Forest in close
proximity to St. Joe River - Skookum Canyon is a great thing to do, and Skookum Canyon is in close proximity, and is a good place. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Bitterroot Range. Hiking along the Nelson Peak Trail
is good fun; you'll never forgive yourself if you don’t go skiing at Lookout Pass if you're here. This is such a great river. You'll meet a lot of people from Avery here, and you can have a splendid hiking adventure along the Kyle Creek Trail.
