This is NOT a non stop paddle. There is a water fall /dam at the old rail bridge about 3/4 way through this trip that you will have to walk around. Its no bid deal to pull out and carry to the lower spot though.....
Also the LKR is very shallow in many spots and will have to do some walking through weed patches and rocky shallows in summer months. Little Kentucky River is more like a big creek than a river and if not too shallow for your |
boat, this will likely be a still water paddle. I went by yesterday to scope out the run by foot and car with a native to the area who showed me some spots like the waterfall. Am checking out the course this weekend to see
| if a flat bottom Kayak can make it through in June.
Thanks to the folks at the Little Kentucky River Winery for the info. Says April Rietze
How is the trip from Sulphur to 421? I have never canoed it? Says Brian
If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so don't forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. The wonderful Kentucky scenery and | |
|
the water flowing gracefully down Little Kentucky River attract people from near and far. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The starting point is not
too far from Madison, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip. A good workout and a chance to spend some
time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. The Sulphur to Kentucky 421 stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system.
