Maine whitewater, Bear

Oxford county, Devils Horseshoe section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-III     6.8 miles
This section of Bear in Oxford County is 6.8 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. The starting location is a short drive from Berlin, as you can see on the road map further down. On this section you do get some distance, it's good length for a morning trip. The wild scenery of the White Mountains is great. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Devils Horseshoe section is one
of them. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is
an area with plenty of places for that. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The natural beauty of Oxford County and the playfulness of the water beats anything. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. The average Maine whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so better not forget that
many of the rivers in this state are not very demanding.

Briefly about the general area:
The Old Speck Mountain Trail offers hiking at its best, and lots of people from Andover come here. So much fun stuff in the White Mountains, just unbelievable. Don't leave Bear without first checking out Lightning Ledge It's always glorious to have a look at Screw Auger Falls. This river has it all. There's great hiking along the Table Rock Trail, and the best way to spend a winter day is on the slopes of close by Sunday River. While staying at Bear you could always explore Mother Walker Falls Gorge, and Grafton Notch State Park is a nice location to stop by.
