  This section of Dead River - South Branch in Maine is 7.5 miles long and is a class II-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you're coming from Lewiston-Auburn it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Maine are easier than the national norm, so you'd better keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding.
    You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some
time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. On this section you do get some distance, it's good length for a morning trip. The beautiful scenery of Maine and the beautiful way  
the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far.

Briefly about the general area:
If the weather is glorious here at Dead River - South Branch, you can go for a hike along the Bigelow Range Trail, and skiing at Saddleback is one of those things you just should do. Here at Dead River - South Branch you'll probably meet some folks from Stratton; on a glorious day you can take a hike along the Piazza Rock Trail. This is a great river. Throughout the warm months highs here at Dead River - South Branch get into the 70's. Once the sun is down it falls down to the 50's.
