  Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Maine tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so don't forget that a lot of the rivers in this state are suitable for beginners. The put-in location is a short drive from Bangor, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The nature scenery of Washington County and the cool fresh water have people coming here. This stretch of Old Stream in Maine is 25 miles long
    and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling spots. For all you camping people
there are campgrounds nearby. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Second Lake to Machias River section is one of them. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so pack your sleeping bag. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some  
time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people.

Briefly about the general area:
It's always great to visit Stinking Jam Rapids. All through the warm days of summer at Old Stream highs are regularly in the 70's while overnight lows are frequently in the 50's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 20's; winter nights come with lows in the 0's to Old Stream. Old Stream ordinarily gets a great deal of rainfall. Of all the months in a year November is the one with the most rain; the driest of the months is June.
