Maine whitewater, Penobscot River

Hancock Waldo county, South Orrington to Sandy Point section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS I-III     14 miles
The South Orrington to Sandy Point stretch of Penobscot River is 14 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-III section of whitewater. The put-in is not too far from Bangor, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The nature scenery of Hancock Waldo County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but
do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The average Maine whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than
those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag. The South Orrington to Sandy Point stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this
river system. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more.

Briefly about the general area:
At Penobscot River you always meet someone from Bucksport; since you're here you have to have a look at Collins Cove. Swan Lake State Park is a good spot to stretch your legs a bit; if you're looking for a beach nearby we recommend Spragues Beach. Coming to this river is always a good idea. Penobscot River is close to Fort Point State Park which is a delightful spot. There's no such thing as a bad day of skiing at nearby New Hermon Mountain.
