  If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so better not forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. This section of Penobscot River - West Branch is 17 miles long and is a class III-V section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you'll find a large number
    of good rivers. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Ripogenus
Gorge to Debsconeag section is just one of many. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your sleeping bag. The scenic beauty of Piscataquis County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream have people coming here. The put-in is not too far from Bangor, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The nearby hotels are a bit away from  
the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.

Briefly about the general area:
The Blue Trail is a good hiking trail close to Penobscot River - West Branch, and there is a good hiking trail close by called the Abol Trail. During the summertime at Penobscot River - West Branch highs are generally in the 70's, and through the night it cools down to the 50's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 20's; overnight lows at Penobscot River - West Branch during the wintertime usually descend into the-10's. The amount of precipitation that falls at Penobscot River - West Branch is close to the national average.
