  Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so keep in mind that rivers in this state are less demanding. The Oakes Bog to Blanchard section of Piscataquis River - West Branch in Piscataquis County is 9 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Augusta-Waterville, if you're not familiar with the
    area there's a road map further down the page. This stretch has has enough mileage, it's good length for a morning trip. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large
number of good spots. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. The wonderful Piscataquis County scenery and the cool fresh water have people coming here. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system,  
the Oakes Bog to Blanchard stretch is just one of many. The campgrounds here at Piscataquis River - West Branch are pretty good.

Here at Piscataquis River - West Branch you'll probably meet some people from Abbot, and Piscataquis River - West Branch is right by the Intake Trail. Take a hike on the Big Squaw Mountain Trail.
