  The Steep Falls section of Saco River in Cumberland County is 0.3 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-II+(V+) section of whitewater. The starting location is a short drive from Portland-South Portland, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The average Maine whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot
    of the rivers in this state are suitable for beginners. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. The Steep Falls stretch is one of a few paddling stretches
in this river system. The nature scenery of Cumberland County and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is an extremely short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. No matter if you're whitewater rafting  
or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here.

Briefly about the general area:
Saco River is near Sebago Lake State Park which is a delightful place, and Cold Bowling Spring is an inspiring spot to explore while you're here. You're sure to bump into some great people from East Baldwin here. Summertime highs at Saco River commonly tend to be in the 70's; through summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. Through the winter highs are commonly in the 20's while the cold winter nights at Saco River are in the 0's. Saco River is a wet spot that gets a large amount of precipitation.
