  This section of Sandy River is 5.8 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Lewiston-Auburn, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that lots of rivers in this state are good for beginners. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the
    great campgrounds nearby. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling spots. This
section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, good for a one day paddling trip. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the South Branch to Phillips stretch is just one of them. The nature scenery of Maine and the cool fresh water have people coming here. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your  
car.

Briefly about the general area:
A visit to Mt. Blue State Park rejuvenates the spirit, and the skiing at Saddleback is great. While you're here at Sandy River you can take a hike along the Piazza Rock Trail, and while you're here you will meet lots of people from nearby Phillips. This is a great river. If the weather is great here at Sandy River, you can go for a hike along the Brook Trail. From a precipitation point of view Sandy River is a reasonably common site. August is the month that gets the most rain while February is ordinarily the driest month. For the period of the summertime, highs mostly are in the 70's at Sandy River.
