The wonderful Maine scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. This stretch of Sandy River - South Branch is 2.8 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II section. If you're coming from Lewiston-Auburn it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you |
might find the rivers here more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance
| you're all set. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of places for that. This is a pretty short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. This river system is full of great paddling sections, the Number Six Road to ME 4 section is just one of them. Getting a good | |
|
workout and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here.
Briefly about the general area: The Piazza Rock Trail offers hiking at its best, and a visit here wouldn’t be complete without
a trip to close by Mt. Blue State Park. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Brook Trail, and this is a popular place for people from Phillips. This is such a great river. You'll never forgive yourself if you don’t go
skiing at Saddleback since you're here. Summertime highs at Sandy River - South Branch typically tend to be in the 70's. Summer overnight lows drop down to the 50's.
