Maine whitewater, Wild River

Oxford county, Hastings to Gilead section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-IV     3 miles
The Hastings to Gilead section of Wild River in Maine is 3 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-IV section of whitewater. The natural beauty of Oxford County and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Maine is often easier than elsewhere, so better not forget that a lot of the rivers in this state are suitable for beginners. Whitewater paddling here in the White
Mountains is a great experience. If you're coming from Berlin it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. A bit of exercise
and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. This is a bit of a short stretch so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling
rivers. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too.

Briefly about the general area:
You'll meet a lot of folks from Lovell here, and the slopes of Sunday River are so inviting noone can resist. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the White Mountains. You might want to pay a visit to Carlton Notch if you're here at Wild River. Hiking is a popular thing to do around Wild River; Hastings Trail is a splendid local trail. Grafton Notch State Park is a glorious place to stretch your legs a bit, and the Roost Trail offers hiking at its best.
