The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so keep in mind that a lot of the rivers in this state are suitable for beginners. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your camping stuff. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. Lodging is available near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This stretch of Big Elk Creek is 12.6 miles long and is according to   American Whitewater a class I-II section of whitewater. Briefly about the general area: Don't leave Big Elk Creek without visiting Lums Pond State Park, and if you're dropping by from Elk Mills, you won't be the only one. A magnificent place like Elk Neck State Park in the vicinity of Big Elk Creek is too great to leave out, and if you want to hit the beach, Roachs Shore is in close proximity. This river is so wonderful. High temperatures at Big Elk Creek throughout the summer are in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures drop down into the 60's. For the period of the wintertime highs are commonly in the 30's while the cold winter nights at Big Elk Creek are in the 20's.
