Maryland whitewater, Gunpowder Falls Baltimore county, Falls Road to Phoenix section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     15 miles   This is a very forgiving and beautiful stretch of river; however, there are a number of strainers to negotiate.  One thing, though, I have lived in MD for decades and NEVER seen a poisonous snake, not like I have out west or down south, and the VERY first outing on this stretch had us come across two copperheads within a half hour of each other, with the second sunning itself on the very strainer we had to pull the boats across and climb     over ourselves.  Other than that, add a couple of hours to any suggested trip durations, if the water is lower. This section of Gunpowder Falls in Maryland is 15 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Falls Road to Phoenix section is just one of many. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit   more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers in this state are good for beginners. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The put-in location is a short drive from Baltimore-Towson, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag.
