Maryland whitewater, Potomac River

Frederick Washington county, Sandy Hook to Point of Rocks section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS I-II     13.5 miles
If you're coming from Hagerstown-Martinsburg it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The Sandy Hook to Point of Rocks stretch of Potomac River in Frederick/ Washington County is 13.5 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. No need to look hard for hotels, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill
up quick. The wonderful Frederick/ Washington County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in
this state than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that lots of rivers in this state are good for beginners. The Sandy Hook to Point of Rocks section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. This stretch is long enough for an overnight
trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came.

Briefly about the general area:
Greenbrier State Park is a fine place; Appalachian National Scenic Trail is a wonderful national park. If the weather is great here at Potomac River, you can go for a hike along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, and there are plenty of people from Lovettsville here at Potomac River. This is such a great river. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Potomac River; the overnight is a tad colder of course, regularly in the 60's.
