The Avilton Lonaconing Road to Head of Savage Reservoir stretch of Savage River is 12.5 miles long and is a class II(IV) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so
    pack your camp stove. The wonderful Maryland scenery and the cool fresh water beats anything. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. The rivers for whitewater
rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so better not forget that a lot of the rivers in this state are suitable for beginners. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Avilton Lonaconing Road to Head of Savage Reservoir stretch is one of them. Warnick Point is close at hand and always good to stop at, and if you're going to from Barton, you won't be the only one. Summertime highs at Savage River usually tend to be in the 80's. Throughout the dark hours of summer temperatures sink down into the 50's. Highs throughout the wintertime are mostly in the 30's with temperatures at Savage River dipping down into the 10's all through winter nights.
