Maryland whitewater, Town Creek

I-68 to Potomac River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS I     27 miles
This stretch of Town Creek is 27 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I section. The nature scenery of Maryland and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Maryland are often more forgiving than in other states, so don't forget that many of the rivers in this state are not very demanding. Getting your paddling muscles activated and
a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
The put-in location is a short drive from Winchester, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This section is long enough for
an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag.

Briefly about the general area:
If the weather is great here at Town Creek, you can go for a hike along the Gum Spring Trail, and nearby you stumble on Sugar Hollow which is a wonderful site to explore. The great folks of Oldtown like to hang out nearby, and on a magnificent day you can take a hike along the Burnt Mills Trail. This river is a great place to visit. Town Creek is a good place of normal rainfall. The month with most of the rain is July; January on the other hand is the driest.
