Massachusetts whitewater, Deerfield River

Franklin county, Monroe Bridge to Bear Swamp section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III-IV     3 miles
The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Bennington, as you can see on the road map further down. The natural beauty of Massachusetts and the water flowing gracefully down Deerfield River attract people from near and far. The average Massachusetts whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers in this state are suitable
for beginners. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good spots
for that around here. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. This is a short paddling stretch so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. The campgrounds here at Deerfield River are pretty good. This
section of Deerfield River is 3 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV section of whitewater.

Briefly about the general area:
Berkshire East is a very popular ski area in the neighborhood, and as expected, everybody loves Monroe State Forest. Take a hike on the Dunbar Brook Trail; during your tour here you'll meet some people from Monroe Bridge for sure. This river is so wonderful. Have a great hiking adventure along the Busby Trail, and Mohawk Trail State Forest is a nice location to go. Deerfield River gets a typical amount of rainfall. During the month of August you get the most rain around here, and the driest month of the year is February.
