Massachusetts whitewater, Westfield River

Hampden county, Huntington to Russell section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS I-II     4 miles
If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers in this state are not as hard as elsewhere. The nature scenery of Massachusetts and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The Huntington to Russell stretch of Westfield River is 4 miles long and is a class I-II section
of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This stretch is mid length, good for a one day
paddling trip. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. If you're coming from Springfield it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Huntington to Russell section is just one of many. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of places
for that. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more.

Briefly about the general area:
A spree to Gardner State Park revitalizes the spirit; Westfield River is a place with many visitors from Russell. You simply must stop at Turtle Bend while you're here at Westfield River; Babbs Beach is relatively nearby if you're in a beach type of mood. This river is always fun. On a good day at Westfield River you can take a hike along the Richard Trail, and you'll never forgive yourself if you don’t go skiing at Blandford if you're here.
