  The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Massachusetts are often easier than in other states, so keep in mind that many of the sections in this state are safe for beginners. The Becket to Chester section of Westfield River - West Branch is 9.5 miles long and it is classified as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater. The natural beauty of Massachusetts and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are
    reasons enough to come here and paddle. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. No
matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The Becket to Chester section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Pittsfield, if you're not familiar with  
the area there's a road map further down the page.

Briefly about the general area:
Tolland State Forest is a fine place; while you're here you can take a hike along the Spring Trail. Places like Chester-Blandford State Forest are magnificent to explore, and why not head up to Otis Ridge and strap some skis to your feet. This is such a great river. The good people of Chester like to hang out close by. Westfield River - West Branch usually gets a lot of precipitation. August is when you get the most rain here, and the driest month of the year is January. During the days of summer, highs commonly are in the 80's at Westfield River - West Branch, and through the night it cools down to the 50's.
