Michigan whitewater, Big Iron River

Ontonagon county, White Pine to Silver City section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-III     4.3 miles
This stretch of Big Iron River in Michigan is 4.3 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. The scenic beauty of Ontonagon County and the playfulness of the water have people coming here. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the White Pine to Silver City section is one of them. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Great exercise and spending some
quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. If you're coming from Merrill it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location,
please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other states, so don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy. The beautiful Gogebic Range scenery
is an added bonus. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of rivers for that.

Briefly about the general area:
Put some time aside to spend at Pewabeck Falls since you're here at Big Iron River. Porcupine Mountains State Park is a splendid place to stop by on a pretty day, and Bonanza Falls is always fun to check out. At this river you will always have a good time. The skiing at Porcupine Mountain is perfect, and if you're dropping by from White Pine, you won't be the only one. For the duration of the summertime months highs here at Big Iron River reach the 70's.
