Michigan whitewater, Black River

Gogebic county, Ramsey to above Gabbro Falls section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-III     2.2 miles
This stretch of Black River is 2.2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. The wonderful Michigan scenery and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This river
system is full of great paddling sections, the Ramsey to above Gabbro Falls section is just one of them. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. The wild scenery of the Gogebic
Range is great. The starting point is not too far from Merrill, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This is a somewhat short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Michigan are easier than the national norm, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the rivers in this state are not very demanding. Whether you're whitewater
rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling rivers.

Briefly about the general area:
The Rainbow Falls Trail offers hiking at its best, and a short journey to Neepikon Falls is always worthwhile. Be careful coming to the Gogebic Range, you might not ever wanna return home again. Everybody close by loves skiing at Blackjack; Neepikon Falls is a charming spot to go to while you're at Black River. This river has so much to offer. You're sure to bump into some wonderful folks from Ramsay here. At Black River all through the warm days of summer highs are in the 70's with overnight lows in the 50's.
