Michigan whitewater, Carp River Ontonagon Gogebic county, above Shining Cloud Falls to Lake Superior section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS IV(V)     1.7 miles   This section of Carp River is 1.7 miles long and has been rated as a class IV(V) section by American Whitewater. The scenic beauty of Ontonagon/Gogebic County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The starting point is not too far from Merrill, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time     in nature are great reasons to come. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Michigan is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the above Shining Cloud Falls to Lake Superior section is one of them. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. When you're paddling down a Gogebic Range river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. You might be into whitewater   rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good places for that around here. This section is quite short so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. Briefly about the general area: Put some time aside to spend at Shining Cloud Falls while you're here at Carp River. Have a good hiking adventure along the Rainbow Falls Trail. Porcupine Mountains State Park is a good location to stretch your legs a bit, and Traders Falls is always fun to check out. This is such a wonderful river. Really fine skiing awaits you at Indianhead.
