Michigan whitewater, Chocolay River Marquette county, Highway 41 to Cty Road BH section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II(III)     2.2 miles   I did this trip in about 1968.  Watch out for small waterfalls and take out either on Green Garden Road or the Mangnum Road. Says Jerry Bills This stretch is not floatable, at least at the end of May. I wound up carrying the kayak over my head in 4 inches of water for much of this stretch. Says Bill The Highway 41 to Cty Road BH stretch of Chocolay River in Marquette County is 2.2 miles long and it is classified as a class I-II(III)     section by American Whitewater. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Michigan you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so you'd better keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. The wonderful Michigan scenery and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Highway 41 to Cty Road BH stretch is one of them. This is a somewhat short section so better bring some good walking shoes. The   put-in location is a short drive from Marquette, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The campgrounds here at Chocolay River are pretty good. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of spots for that. Briefly about the general area: Marquette has nice slopes and a friendly staff. Places like Laughing Whitefish Falls State Park are splendid to have a look at, and during your visit here you'll meet some folks from Skandia for sure. Coming to this river is always a good idea.
